Ah, summer. The season has arrived in Athens. In the South, summer starts a little earlier than elsewhere in the country. With early start dates in the fall, most universities and colleges in the South are done for the spring semester in early May, with college towns and campuses thinning out for the summer months. While we love the hustle and bustle of campus during the fall and spring semesters, these next few months are just as much fun for us at the museum. They offer something different, for our patrons and for our own day-to-day.
Each summer, our staff and volunteers enjoy the summer months at the museum tremendously. We see new faces–those visiting the museum, campus or Athens for the first time–and those who we haven’t seen in a while. Summer, with its slowed pace, allows us to take pause and contemplate, visit new places, friends or family or just have a few more minutes to reflect and enjoy the languid days of the season. The Georgia Museum of Art is but one of many opportune venues or destinations for adventure and reflection this season, but, as always, we are delighted to be able to share experiences, be hospitable and meet folks who are visiting our museum to see our permanent collection and new exhibitions, enjoy programming or our special events during these beautiful days on campus. The cool AC at the museum is just another added benefit to coming to see our staff and our beloved works.
This summer, as we continue to work and plan for our upcoming exhibitions ahead, we are also here and proud to showcase our current works and host our unique educational programming. We are also preparing for the arrival of our new director, Dr. David Odo, later this summer. It’s an exciting time of transition for us, but like all of you, it’s also a time of reflection and adventure before the pace picks back up again for the fall semester.
We hope you’ll join us for our summer programming, tours of galleries and all of the wonderful exhibitions on view for these months. While we recommend a self-guided tour and perusal of our galleries anytime the mood hits you, here’s a list of our special events ahead on our calendar this summer that might also entice you to seek out a bit of adventure and wonder within our walls.
We hope you’ll join us for a visit or a special event in the months ahead. Here’s what we have for you in the weeks ahead:
