The Georgia Museum of Art received Junior League of Athens Community Impact mini-grant funds to partner with the Athens, Georgi,a Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and Coile Middle School in creating enriching afterschool programming. During the four-session POV: Photography program, the museum’s education department met with over 20 students from Coile Middle School to create three photography projects.

In October, students learned about cyanotypes, one of the oldest types of photography. Students also created their own cyanotypes, and conducted critiques of each other’s works by telling the artist something they like, asking the artist a question and giving a positive suggestion about the work of art. This critiquing method was referred to as T.A.G.

The museum staff helped students discover more information about artists of color in November. They also learned different purposes of photography and how to shoot Polaroid mini pictures. During this session, student conducted interviews with their classmates.

Students explored the difference between film and digital cameras during the December session. Each participant used a disposable black-and-white film camera to take pictures with. Students also participated in an outdoor treasure hunt to snap pictures of items, and they took “super-hero” poses of each other.

Though the afterschool programming ended before the final reception due to the COVID-19, students were still able to complete their projects. The museum looks forward to continuing student programming like this in the future.
