Canvas to Commerce: Creativity Meets Entrepreneurship at Annual Pop-Up Artist Market

Artists share a variety of prints, jewelry, ceramics and more at the annual Pop-Up Artist Market.

Athens will once again come alive with the creative energy of emerging artists, handmade goods and community connection at the Georgia Museum of Art Student Association’s ninth annual Pop-Up Artist Market, held on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the working studio of local artist Stan Mullins at 650 Pulaski Street. Sponsored by the UGA Parents Leadership Council, this year’s event promises to bring together student artists from UGA’s campus and the larger Athens community to create a one-day marketplace where visitors can explore and purchase a variety of handmade items, such as art prints, ceramics, jewelry and more.

A Launchpad for Student Creators

Beyond the eclectic booths and creative energy, the artist market serves a deeper purpose: removing financial barriers for student artists. Traditionally, young artists hoping to break into the art market scene are met with high vendor booth fees that can make participation difficult — especially for students just beginning to build their portfolios or find their audience. This event eliminates those fees, offering student vendors the chance to experience what it’s like to sell work in a professional, in-person setting without any cost to participate.

For many, this event is an introduction to the business side of creativity — pricing items, setting up displays, marketing their work and engaging directly with buyers. Whether someone is selling handmade ceramics or hand-sewn accessories, the market becomes a hands-on learning experience that blends artistry with entrepreneurship.

This spirit of experimentation and inclusion is what makes the event so dynamic. By offering students a space to test ideas in a low-risk environment, the market fosters not just sales but confidence, conversation and creative growth.

“This year’s market gives attendees the opportunity to support both local artists and student vendors,” says Tallulah Sanders, president of the Georgia Museum Student Association. “We have tons of really amazing folks participating this year, including vendors selling locally grown venus flytraps and pitcher plants, handcrafted jewelry, fabric arts, personalized art, vintage fashion and original metalwork.”

Rooted in Athens, Open to All

The market is open to the public and designed to be accessible and enjoyable for art lovers and casual browsers alike. Located across from the Leathers Building on Pulaski Street, the studio and sprawling grounds of sculptor and painter Stan Mullins offer a rare behind-the-scenes opportunity to view works in progress. It’s an invitation to experience the creative pulse of Athens — not just through what’s on display, but through who’s behind it. The event creates a synergy between the university, the local arts community and small businesses, all working together to create something meaningful and memorable.

A Celebration of Creative Community

Whether you’re a collector, an arts enthusiast or simply looking for a thoughtful gift or unique piece, the annual artist market is a celebration of process, passion and place. It’s not just a market — it’s a reminder that great art can come from anywhere and that early opportunities to share that art can make all the difference.

Join us Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 650 Pulaski Street, rain or shine. Come support student artists, shop local and take home something that tells a story.
