In June, the Georgia Museum of Art welcomed Caroline Moore as an art handler in the collections and exhibitions division. After graduating from the University of Georgia this spring, Moore is trading textbooks and classrooms for a more hands-on experience in art exhibitions. In her role as art handler, she will assist in installation duties, such as packing and unpacking works of art for travel; moving, hanging or otherwise installing works of art; lighting; and producing labels and signs. This upcoming year, she will specifically work on matting works on paper from the Pierre Daura Collection to provide more efficient storage and to prepare for potential exhibitions related to the collection.
Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Moore discovered UGA through her mother, who grew up in Georgia and graduated from the university. Moore majored in art history and minored in studio art and English. She also completed the museum studies certificate program, through which she found the opportunity to intern at the Georgia Museum of Art.
Since starting the internship just under two years ago, Moore has learned about the work that goes into the care and presentation of museum collections. She has a lifelong love of museums and the way they preserve and provide public access to art and culture, and her experience in the internship allowed her to closely engage with art in a way that she had always dreamed of doing but had never conceived of as a true possibility.
“What I appreciated most about the internship, and what I think has prepared me most for my full-time role, is how varied the work was from day to day,” Moore says. “In fact, almost all of the work I will be doing moving forward will be an extension of what I did during my internship. I learned such a wide array of skills throughout each exhibition cycle, and I’m sure I’ll learn even more in this new position. I’ve really found a great love and interest for the hands-on nature of this work, so I’m definitely excited for the opportunity to continue pursuing it.”
Moore’s new position is not her only outlet for creativity. When she’s not working on the museum’s exhibitions, you can find stoking her artistic fire. Outside of work, Moore enjoys reading, writing and making art. Now that she has graduated, she’s looking forward to putting energy into the creative endeavors she set aside during her time in school, such as combining her love for creative writing and studio art through bookmaking.
