Athens, GA — The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will host its spring Museum Mix on Thursday, April 25, from 8 to 11 p.m. All of the galleries will be open for the late-night art party. DJ duo Taylor Chicoine and Alexis Spina will be spinning the freshest tunes, and free refreshments and snacks will be provided. As always, the event is free and open to the public.
Museum Mix will be Chicoine and Spina’s DJ debut, complete with video elements. As an undergraduate student at UGA, Chicoine was a WUOG 90.5 FM DJ. That experience got him into making playlists with friends. For Spina, her interest in DJing was born out of her tendency to listen to recorded DJ sets while she works in her studio––she also graduated from UGA, earning a master of fine arts degree in metalwork and jewelry in 2018.
Fittingly, Chicoine and Spina met on the Little Kings dance floor, where they were brought together by a DJ Mahogany set. For about a year now, the couple has been talking about hosting a dance party.
“We like to go out dancing and see what people are playing, and we feel like we can bring something different to the mix,” Chicoine said. For him and Spina, music and visual art are intertwined, making Museum Mix the perfect occasion for their first DJ gig. “Dance is a form a visual art; your body becomes a moving sculpture, shaped by sound waves,” Chicoine said.
Chicoine said the set for Museum Mix is inspired by house party playlists from his time as an undergrad.
“Alexis and I have brought this sort of collaborative playlist feel to our set and are hoping people will find something new to get down to,” Chicoine said. Ultimately, the couple hopes guests will come ready to dance. “We just want to share some of our favorite dance songs with you, because we love to dance, and if you do, too, we hope you’ll come check it out,” Chicoine said.
Exhibitions on view will include the 2019 Master of Fine Arts degree candidates exhibition, “Life, Love and Marriage Chests in Renaissance Italy,” “Stony the Road We Trod” and “Out of the Darkness.” As with last spring’s Museum Mix, the event will be immediately preceded by MFA Speaks at 6:30 p.m. MFA candidates will each have three minutes to discuss their work.
