The Georgia Museum of Art is pleased to welcome Nina K. Guzmán as the new assistant editor. Although new to the museum staff, she’s been a close work colleague as she spent the last four years working right next door at the Lamar Dodd School of Art as the Art Library coordinator. During her time there she collaborated with the museum for different events including the Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in creative writing and women’s studies before moving to Athens, Georgia. Since graduating, she’s been steadily writing for a wide variety of newspapers and magazines. She’s a regular contributor for BUST magazine and has had pieces published in Compound Butter, LitHub, the Seed & Plate and Flagpole. She has also contributed her copywriting and editing skills to local publications and businesses including Recipe for Press, a communications and brand development firm.

Guzmán began her involvement in UGA as the circulation assistant at the Law Library, where she wrote engaging articles in its monthly newsletter, Amicus Briefs, which highlighted the library’s resources and facilitated a dialogue with the law students. When she began working as the Art Library coordinator, along with her daily tasks, she also oversaw The Artist is Reading blog, a virtual reading residency that spotlighted book recommendations from visiting artists and faculty. In both of these jobs she always enjoyed figuring out different approaches (from social media to monthly exhibits) of introducing students to interesting topics and how the libraries can facilitate their research.

During the pandemic, Guzmán contributed to the New Georgia Encyclopedia image replacement project and website redesign as their Media Fellow while simultaneously earning her Masters in Library and Information Science degree from Valdosta University. During her studies she was drawn to working with archival materials with a focus on local communities. When not writing or editing items for the museum, she can be found working as the assistant to Margie Compton at the Walter J. Brown Media Archives where she helps organize and compile home movie collections.

What she enjoys most about working in libraries and writing freelance is that while each position requires specific knowledge and skills, it also demands flexibility and a willingness to keep learning and take on new challenges as needed.

From the moment she moved to the “Classic City” back in 2013, Guzmán knew she had found a special place and is proud to call Athens home. From fostering dogs through the local animal shelter to playing cello in the Athens Symphony Orchestra, she loves finding ways to get involved in the community and joining the wonderful team at the Georgia Museum of Art is an extension of that.
