Although there are several dates within the African-American community to commemorate the ending of legalized slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is the most widely celebrated anniversary. Slaves in Texas were the last to found out about their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The Georgia Museum of Art recognizes this historic day as a time to celebrate freedom and reflect on the past and present.
