Press Release: Georgia Museum of Art to host winter reception

01.31.2019

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will hold its quarterly reception, 90 Carlton, celebrating the winter exhibitions, on February 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. These receptions are organized by the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art to highlight museum exhibitions. Attendees can enjoy light refreshments, gallery activities and door prizes. They can also participate in “Ask the Expert,” asking questions of curators and other experts in the galleries.

This event is free for members of the museum and $5 for nonmembers. Enjoy complimentary admission when becoming a member of the museum. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance. RSVP to gmoarsvp@uga.edu or by calling 706.542.4199. Register at bit.ly/90c-winter2019.

The exhibitions highlighted include:

  • “The Reluctant Autocrat: Tsar Nicholas II” (on view through March 17, 2019): This exhibition focuses on the reigns of the last two Romanov rulers, Alexander III (1881 –1894) and his son and successor Nicholas II (1894 – 1917). It draws attention to the incongruity of the divinely inspired autocracy with modern life while highlighting human fragility against the massive flow of history. The exhibition incorporates several delicate textile objects (including two children’s costumes: a Cossack robe and a gold-embroidered Caucasian outfit for a boy), porcelain, lithographs, photographs and militaria.
  • “Stony the Road We Trod” (on view February 2 through April 28, 2019): This exhibition will show works by African American artists in the museum’s permanent collection and by this year’s Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Award winner, Leo Twiggs. This year’s Black History Month theme is “Black Migrations,” and these works show how African American artists visually portrayed notions of migration from the South and responses to new urban environments.
