Please RSVP online at bit.ly/90c-autumn2019 or to 706.542.4199 or gmoarsvp@uga.edu. The exhibitions highlighted include:

  • “Mary Lee Bendolph: Quilted Memories” (October 5 – December 29, 2019): Officially opening to the public the following day, this exhibition features quilts created by artist Mary Lee Bendolph spanning three decades. Bendolph worked in textile-related fields until 1992, when she retired and then had more time to devote to quilting. The artist, who is from Gee’s Bend, Alabama, comes from a family with generations of talented quilt makers.
  • “Rachel Whiteread” (on view through March 8, 2020): This installation in the Jane and Harry Willson Sculpture Garden includes five cast-stone sculptures by the London artist, all on loan from Gagosian. These works reinterpret Whiteread’s earlier resin castings of the space beneath chairs and are arranged in a domestic table setting. The sculptures feature variations in stone type and surface texture that allow each piece to interact with changing outdoor lighting throughout the day. The museum also selected works on paper by Whiteread and related artists that are on display inside, on the second floor.
  • “Drama and Devotion in Baroque Rome” (on view through May 31, 2020): This exhibition includes six Old Master paintings on loan from the Museum and Gallery at Bob Jones University that celebrate Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s influence on the Italian baroque.
  • “Before the War: Photographs of Syria by Peter Aaron” (on view through December 1, 2019): This exhibition features images from the architectural photographer’s book “Syria: Before the Deluge,” which contains photographs from his 2009 family trip to Syria. Two years after his trip, civil war broke out in Syria and many of the monuments in his photographs, such as the castle Krak des Chevaliers, were destroyed.

Event partners include The Athens Printing Company, Barron’s Rental Center, Epting Events, Guide 2 Athens, Perryander Studio and Terrapin Beer Company.
