Studio Workshop: Portrait Medallion Sculpting with Luke Graves

Join Luke Graves for a three-part clay medallion sculpture course exploring the fundamentals of low-relief portraiture. Participants will create a polymer clay portrait medallion while learning to translate facial features into shallow depth, with an emphasis on proportion, planes and subtle surface modeling. Through guided demonstrations and individual feedback, artists will develop their work with inspiration from the sculpture of Edmonia Lewis. $25 for Donating-level members (email jointhemuseum@uga.edu for your registration link); $35 for everyone else (register here(opens in new tab)). Space is limited and registration is required. Sessions will be held October 1, 8 and 15, 6 – 8 p.m.

Luke Graves is an Athens-based artist and instructor. While his primary focus is portrait and figure painting, he also has a background in sculpture, including metal casting and clay. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he earned a bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in sculpture and a minor in drawing and painting.
