It’s August, the last month of the summer. It is hot outside! One good way to cool off is to play in water.
Do you see water in this picture? Let’s take a moment to look at it. What else do you see?
Do you see sailboats floating in the water? And sails shaped like triangles? What color are the sails? Do you see the little people on their boats? The people are working. They are catching fish to sell at the food market.
Take a look at the sky and clouds in the painting. Do you think it is a hot day outside? Talk to someone you are with about what you think the weather feels like in this painting.
Now it is time to make your own art outside using water. For this art activity, you can paint with water and play outside. Don’t forget to splash the water around!

You will need:
- A container of water (a bowl or empty yogurt container work well)
- Different size brushes, sponges, or paint rollers
- Concrete surface like a safe driveway or sidewalk
How to paint with water:
- Find a good place outside where you can safely paint on a concrete surface.
- Set up your container of water and different painting tools so they are within reach.
- Experiment with your painting tools. Dip them in water and draw different shapes on the dry cement. Try tracing your hand or shadows, or splash water to create unexpected shapes.
- Notice how long it takes for your marks to dry and disappear.
