Have you listened to music that makes a loud BOOM or a low BAH sound? A tuba is an instrument that makes deep, low sounds. Can you pretend to play a tuba? Lift your arms in the air like you’re holding a big, shiny tuba. Now puff out your cheeks and make a deep BAH sound.

This painting by Lamar Dodd was inspired by music. It’s called “Seven Tubas.” Can you find and count seven shiny circles in the painting? These are the tubas. Dodd imagined a band with seven big tubas making sounds together, just like the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band. Click here to watch them perform: UGA Redcoat Band. Did you see any tubas?
Now it’s your turn to make your own instrument!
For this activity, you will need:
- toilet paper roll
- rice, beans or pasta
- wax paper or construction paper
- tape or rubber bands
- scissors
- markers, stickers or crayons for decorating

To make your sound shaker:
- Cover one end of the toilet paper roll with wax paper or construction paper. Use scissors to cut a small square of paper and secure it with a rubber band or tape.
- Add ¼ cup of rice, beans or pasta inside the tube.
- Cover the other end with paper and secure.
- Use markers, stickers, tape or crayons to add color to your shaker.
- What sounds can your shaker make? Try shaking slow, then fast. Dance to your beat!
