For this Toddler Tuesday, we are going to look at an impressionist painting and read “Tree” by Britta Teckentrup.
Let’s take a closer look at this painting. What do you see? I see a big tree. And a river of blue water. And a person standing near the tree. What else can you find?
Daniel Garber, Spring Panel, 1931-33
The name of this painting is “Spring Panel.” Spring is the season we are in right now. The weather is warming up. Everything is in bloom. And trees are growing new leaves. Does this painting look like spring to you? Talk to someone you are with about what you see.
What did you think of that book? Trees are so special and important. They give us many things. They give us shade on a sunny day and a place for birds and squirrels to live. Can you think of other things that trees give us?
Now that we have looked at art together and read a book, it’s your turn to make art.

You will need:
- Paper
- Green and brown construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
How to make spring leaves:
- Cut the green construction paper into little squares, smaller than an inch.
- Cut the brown construction paper into a trunk and limbs. Glue to the paper.
- Dot glue around the top of the branches.
- Encourage your toddler to stick the green shapes on the glue at the top of the tree. Continue layering glue and “leaves” until you are finished.
