Toddler Tuesday: Swirls and Twirls

11.05.2025

For Toddler Tuesday this month, we’re making art together!

This work of art by Letterio Calapai is titled “Sea Swirl.” Take a look at it. What do you see? Does it look like a swirling wave and a sunset above the ocean?

Tell someone you are with what colors you find. Find the swirl and trace it in the air with your finger.

Now it is your turn to make swirling, twirling colorful waves!

Letterio Calapai (American, 1902 – 1993), “Sea Swirl,” 1948. Color woodcut. Collection of Michael T. Ricker.

For this activity you will need:
  • Newspaper or kraft paper
  • Watercolor paper
  • A permanent marker or smudge-proof pen
  • Watercolor paint
  • Brush
  • Water

To make your swirl:
  1. Cover your work surface with newspaper or kraft paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Set out watercolor paints, a cup of water and brushes.
  3. For this next step, you and your little one will collaborate. Begin by drawing swirls and twirls, shapes and lines with the marker. Ask your young partner where they think the lines should go. For inspiration, look at the print by Calapai.
  4. When the drawing is complete, invite your little one to paint over the lines. Let them lead and see what you can create together.
  5. Make as many paintings as you want.
  6. When you are finished, admire your colorful swirls and twirls and talk about your favorite masterpieces.
