Artist Eleanor Himmelfarb was inspired by nature and created art about the things she saw outside. She found many ways to show texture in her art. Texture is how something feels or looks. Have you ever splashed in water or squished around in mud? What did it feel like?
Himmelfarb created this painting, “On the Fourth Day,” to show a butterfly’s wings reflected on the surface of water. What colors do you see? Do you see straight or wiggly lines? Can you imagine what it would be like to touch the water or the butterfly’s wings?
For this activity, you will need:
- shaving cream
- washable paint
- paper
- a spoon
- a popsicle stick
- a tray
- a squeegee
To make your artwork:
- Cover your work surface for easy clean-up.
- Spray shaving cream in a rectangle on your tray.
- Smooth the shaving cream out with a spoon so that the surface is flat.
- Drip your favorite paint colors onto the shaving cream.
- Swirl the colors around with a popsicle stick.
- Place your paper on top of the shaving cream and pat, pat, pat.
- Remove your paper and scrape away the shaving cream to show your swirling design.
