Toddler Tuesday: Sink or Float?

07.12.2022

For Toddler Tuesday this month, we’re looking at a painting of boats in water!

The artist Jonas Tugs painted “Bridges and Tugs.” He lived in New York City for a while. He liked to paint boats in water. This bridge in this painting is called the Brooklyn Bridge.

Take a moment to look at this painting. Tell someone you are with what you see. Do you think the boats are floating on the water? Can you find the birds in the ski and the people on the boat?

Now it is your turn to experiment!

Jonas Lie (American b. Norway, 1880 – 1940), “Bridge and Tugs,” c. 1913, Oil on canvas. Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia; Museum purchase with funds provided by C.L. Morehead Jr. 2001.179

For this activity you will need:
  • a bucket of water
  • 5 or 6 objects that can get wet (for example: a rock, a leaf, a feather, bath toys, etc)
  • a cup to hold the objects

Directions:
  1. Fill the bucket of water outside.
  2. Hide the objects.
  3. Go on a treasure hunt.
  4. When your cup of treasures is full, let your little one drop each object in the water one by one. Ask if it will sink or float.
  5. Find more treasures to test and repeat the experiment for as long as you want!
