Toddler Tuesday: Paper Plate Masks

11.05.2025

To celebrate Halloween, let’s explore the enchanting world of masks and costumes that people wear during this spooktacular season. Look at the lively masquerade scene in Lee Ransaw’s painting “Mayors Mask Ball.”

There’s a lot going on in Ransaw’s painting. How many masks do you see? Which is your favorite? What kind of mask would you like to wear to a party?

Now let’s create your own mask using paper plates and a variety of colorful materials.

You will need:
  • Table cover or old newspapers to protect your work surface
  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Markers and crayons
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes, sequins, feathers, glitter, etc.(optional)
  • A straw or a dowel for holding the mask to your face
  • Tape
To make your mask:
  1. Cut the paper plates in half. Add two holes for the eyes. (You may want to help your toddler with the scissors.) These will be the base of the mask.
  2. Decorate your paper plate mask using whatever you have available. You can use markers and crayons to add color, shapes and patterns.
  3. Use glue to attach decorations like feathers, glitter, stickers, googly eyes or sequins.
  4. Tape a straw or dowel to the bottom of the mask, on the back. This will be your handle for holding the mask to your face. Where will you wear your mask?
