Toddler Tuesday: Leaves and Trees

09.21.2020

It’s cooling off outside and fall is just around the corner. You can already see leaves changing and falling to the ground.

This painting is about autumn. It is named “October Wind and Sunlight in the Woods.” Take a moment to look at the painting. Do you see the ground? It is brown in some places. Do you see flowers? What color are they? Do you see the yellow leaves? They look like they are blowing in the wind.

Take a look at this painting again. Talk to someone you are with about what else you see.

Check out the Toddler Tuesday video for storytime in the galleries and for a closer look at this painting.

Now it is time to go on a leaf hunt outside and make your own art. For this art activity, you will paint the leaves you find outside.

You will need:
  • Leaves of all shapes and sizes (green or leathery leaves work best)
  • Newspaper or brown kraft paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Tempera paint

How to paint leaves:
  1. Go on a leaf hunt and collect leaves of all shapes and sizes. The bigger the leaf, the bigger the painting.
  2. When you have collected enough leaves, cover a table with newspaper or kraft paper for easy clean-up, and set up a few cups of paint with brushes.
  3. Paint the front smooth side of the leaf.
  4. Once the paint is dry, glue your painted leaves to a piece of paper or hang them along a stick using string.
