Toddler Tuesday: Green Leaves

11.05.2025

For Toddler Tuesday this month, we’re looking at trees!

Trees change each season. In the springtime, they grow new leaves. When the weather feels good, take a walk outside and look at the tops of trees. New leaves are popping up everywhere. What color are they? Are the leaves small or big? What’s the tallest tree you can find?

Take a closer look at this work of art. What do you see?

Pierre Daura (American, b. Spain, 1896 – 1976), “Heralds of Spring,” 1942 – 45. Oil on canvas. Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia; Gift of Martha Randolph Daura. GMOA 2003.295.

Now it is your turn to add lots of green leaves to the top of a tree.

For this activity, you will need:
  • green paper
  • brown paper
  • white paper
  • clear Con-Tact paper
  • scissors

To Make Your Green Leaves:
  1. To prepare, cut a long rectangle of brown paper and lots of smaller pieces of green paper. Leave some long strips of green so your little artist can practice cutting out their own “leaves.”
  2. Cut a piece of Con-Tact paper the same size as your white paper. Peel off the back. Tape the Con-Tact paper sticky side up to a flat surface.
  3. Help your little artist stick the trunk and lots of leaves to the sticky surface.
  4. When the tree is complete, lay the white paper over the Con-Tact paper.
  5. Hang your tree art somewhere to enjoy!

We’d love your feedback! Please take a few minutes to complete a survey about this program.
