A photograph of some butterfly art

Have you seen any butterflies lately? Butterflies hatch in warm weather and love the spring. They love it because the weather feels good and flowers are blooming everywhere.

Do you think a butterfly would like to live in this painting? Why or why not?

This painting shows a flower garden. What do you see? Do you recognize anything? How many different colors can you find?

After you talk about this painting (and if the weather is nice), try to find a butterfly outside. If you find one, notice what color it is. Is it big or small? When you come inside, do the art activity. It starts with a plain butterfly, and then you add paint to make it beautiful.

For this activity you will need

  • Paper
  • Paint
  • Brush or spoon
  • Marker or pencil
  • Butterfly template (search Google for this)

To make your butterflies

  1. Print a butterfly shape(opens in new tab) or trace or draw a butterfly shape on your paper.
  2. Fold the butterfly in half to make a vertical crease.
  3. Brush or spoon a lot of paint on one half of the butterfly.
  4. Fold the paper and press to spread the paint around.
  5. Open to reveal your butterfly!
