Toddler Tuesday: Boo Bash

11.05.2025

How do you feel today? We can feel many different types of feelings. Sometimes you can feel happy. Other times you may feel sad, mad or everything all at once! What makes you feel happy?

Take a close look at the painting “My Forebears Were Pioneers.” Can you find a dog and a woman? How do you think they feel? Do they have happy or sad faces? The artist Philip Evergood was inspired to paint this woman when he saw her sitting on her porch after a big storm. Even though everything around her appears sad and broken, she has a smile on her face.

Now it’s your turn to create expressive art.

For this activity, you will need:
  • black paper
  • cotton balls
  • white washable paint
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • glue
To make a ghost face:
  1. Cover your work area for easy clean-up.
  2. Pour a small amount of white paint on a washable surface.
  3. Have, have your toddler dip a cotton ball in the paint and begin painting their ghost on a sheet of black paper.
  4. As your toddler finishes painting, shapes for eyes and a mouth on another sheet of black paper. Ask what kind of face they’d like for their ghost: happy or mad eyes? A smiling or surprised mouth?
  5. Cut out the eyes and mouth. Help your toddler glue them to their ghost.
  6. Once finished, admire your ghostly creation.
