Toddler Tuesday: All That Glitters

11.05.2025

For Toddler Tuesday this month we’re looking at beautiful paintings.

What can you find in these paintings? How many birds can you find near the woman? What color are the flowers next to the man? What else can you find?

(left) Francesco d’Ubertino Verdi, called Bachiacca (1494 – 1557), “Portrait of a Woman with a Music Book,” ca. 1540 – 45. Oil, tempera and gold on panel, 103 × 80 centimeters (40 5/8 × 31 5/8 inches). The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, inv. 78.PB.227.

(right) Pier Francesco Foschi (1502 – 1567), “Portrait of a Young Man Weaving a Wreath of Flowers,” ca. 1540. Oil on panel, 99 × 75.5 centimeters (39 × 29 3/4 inches). Purchased with funds from the Herbert I. and Elsa Bamberger Michael Fund, Permanent Collection, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, University of Utah, UMFA1981.047.

The woman is wearing a special kind of hat. Do you see the gold patterns on it? Now it is time to make your own hat.

For this activity you will need:
  • a paper crown or hat (patterns can be found online)
  • assorted stickers
  • washi tape

Directions:
  1. Assemble the crown (or hat).
  2. Help your young artist decorate it using stickers and washi tape.
  3. When the crown is finished, take turns wearing it and posing like the people in the paintings.
