Art at Home: Watercolor Expressionism

11.05.2025
A black-and-white photo of Alice Baber squatting next to one of her paintings as it leans against the wall. She seems to be in the middle of explaining something, as her mouth is slightly open and she seems to be gesturing with her hands as they're a little blurry.

Our last Family Day, in May, focused on color and highlighted the work of Alice Baber. Her artwork is an example of abstract expressionism, an art style that uses color and light to show feelings and emotions. Baber was inspired by nature and often painted circles that look like “colored wind moving
across the canvas.”

Look closely at this painting called “Sound of the Red Dance.” Can you move your hand in the same way the colors and shapes move? Use your hand to trace the path of the circles and swirls in the air, like you’re painting in the sky!

Now it’s your turn to create your own expressive painting.

You will need the following supplies:
  • watercolor paper
  • watercolor pencils
  • water brush
Directions:
  1. Cover your work space.
  2. Find inspiration: listen to music, step outside or think about what colors match your current mood.
  3. Use the watercolor pencils to sketch out a design that shows what you see, hear or feel.
  4. Fill the water brush with water. Gently squeeze as you brush it over your sketch to blend the colors.
  5. Allow your artwork to dry.
  6. Admire your colorful creation.

Our next Family Day is Saturday, June 28.
Come have fun with us!
