Art at Home: Strike a Pose Sculpture

11.05.2025

Our last Family Day focused on the five senses and how they can help us experience art. One of those senses is touch. We usually can’t touch art in museums, but we can try to make our own art using touch and closing our eyes.

Let’s make a sculpture of a person. What kind of pose will your figure be in? Will they be running, or sitting, or reaching?

You’ll need the following supplies:
  • Model Magic (air-dry clay)
  • toothpick
  • markers
  • textured things
  • hand wipes
  • kraft paper or newspaper
To make your sculpture:
  1. Cover your work area with newspaper or kraft paper for easy clean-up.
  2. Divide up your Model Magic into 4 or 5 pieces.
  3. Using a marker, make 5 or 6 dots of color on one piece of Model Magic.
  4. Squeeze and pinch the marker dots until the color mixes in. Add more color as needed.
  5. Shape the torso with this first piece. You can then mix more colors and make different body parts. Attach them to the torso.
  6. Try relying on what you feel more than what you see. Close your eyes and use your sense of touch to shape what you are making.
  7. Add textured details like hair and clothes to finish! Model Magic will dry overnight.

Our next Family Day is June 10.
Come have fun with us!
