Magical Landscape

11.05.2025

Many landscapes are inspired by the beauty of nature. “Rancheria” by Peter Hurd focuses on the majesty of the land. The person walking across the field is teeny tiny compared to the mountain.

This painting is included in “Extra Ordinary: Magic, Mystery and Imagination in American Realism.” This exhibition includes a range of American art that captures the strangeness and wonder of everyday life. “Magic realists” painted the world they saw around them. They also turned to the mystical, magical and imaginative to examine key social issues in America.

In this activity, you’ll create a landscape collage that includes both magical and real things.

You will need:
  • paper
  • pencil
  • watercolor or markers
  • glue
  • sand
  • leaves and grass from outside
  • cotton balls
  • newspaper or kraft paper
To make a magic landscape:
  1. Lay out newspaper or kraft paper on your work surface for easy clean-up.
  2. Draw two horizontal lines that divide the paper into three long parts. The top third is your sky, the middle third is your mountain range, and the bottom third is the land.
  3. Color in your land, mountains and sky.
  4. When your paint is dry, glue down sand, greenery and cotton balls to add texture. For example, cotton balls can be used for clouds, and sand can be the ground and trails.
  5. Add magical details with markers and by gluing on more objects.
