Art for the Heart: Student Night at the Georgia Museum of Art
The Georgia Museum of Art Student Association hosts three Student Nights per year at the the museum—two in the fall, one in the spring—but the spring Student Night is a little bit different. While the fall Student Nights revolve around traveling exhibitions in the museum, the spring event is focused around works of art in the permanent collection. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love-themed works of art are the main attraction.
This semester’s Student Night, called Art for the Heart, is focused around February’s noteworthy holiday for the second year in a row. In years past, the spring Student Night has usually revolved around the spring season, but Valentine’s Day is slowly becoming the central theme of the annual event.
“Last year we did it for Valentine’s Day and it went really well, so we decided to do it again,” said Kylie Anderson, president of the association and third-year student at the University of Georgia.
The night’s activities include several Valentine’s Day-themed crafts such as button-making and making valentines, a staple of Valentine’s Day. Students can also indulge in a hot chocolate bar as well as sweet and salty snacks. To top it all off, cult classic film “The Princess Bride” will be screened along with classic love songs playing throughout the night, and a Polaroid photo booth will be present to commemorate the night’s events.
The Georgia Museum of Art Student Association works to bring awareness to the museum and its activities. When it comes to planning Student Nights, Anderson says the organization meets twice before each event to plan its activities and brainstorms themes and ideas that revolve around the traveling exhibitions or permanent collection.
While the food and most activities taking place at Art for the Heart will occur downstairs, Anderson says that there will also be something that pulls people upstairs into the galleries.
“We’re focused on getting students involved in the museum as well as the larger art community,” Anderson said.
Student Night is held from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13 and is sponsored by the UGA Parents Leadership Council.
