The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia recently received a grant for $75,000 from the Terra Foundation for American Art to support the planning process for the exhibition “The Sculpture of Edmonia Lewis.”

“How do you capture something that is not in front of you?”

For Kei Ito, the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 is just as palpable and present now, nearly 80 years later, as it was the day his grandfather survived it. He carries the weight of the trauma with him as though he experienced it himself. He remembers his grandfather’s description of the bombing vividly. “It was like a hundred suns lighting up the sky,” he recalls his grandfather saying.

For artist Richard Prince, an examination of jokes illuminates the American subconscious in remarkable ways. In “Tell Me Everything,” his latest exhibition, he challenges viewers to examine the value and meaning of jokes in American culture. On view through June 16 at the Georgia Museum of Art, the works also pay homage to famed comedian Milton Berle, who rose to fame in the late 1940s with an evening TV show and helped propel America’s love of television entertainment to its status today.

“It Goes to the People” details museum history, role in creative community

As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the museum this year, this marker in time is a chance to reflect on its history. To that end, “It Goes to the People: 75 Years of Free Inspiration at the Georgia Museum of Art,” an exhibition currently on display at the UGA Special Collections Libraries, offers visitors a chance to do just that. Exhibition visitors are guided through a timeline of museum history that features archive photos and historical artifacts that illustrate the museum’s continued commitment to enrich UGA, Athens and the state through access to art.
