add an art museum experience to your class
The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia offers numerous possibilities for faculty, staff and students to use the museum as an extension of the classroom.
Our diverse permanent collection provides rich opportunities for teaching, learning and research in a range of disciplines across campus. No matter what subject you teach, we can help you facilitate connections between our collection and your curriculum. To discuss the possibilities for your classes or research, contact Alexis Gorby, associate curator of academic and campus engagement, at alexis.gorby@uga.edu or 706.542.4050.
Our University Programs
Curriculum Connections and Class Visits
Faculty from departments across campus regularly use the museum and our collection as an extension of in-class curriculum. Our educators can support your class content with specialized tours of the permanent collection, frame your class visit around a temporary exhibition or pull works from storage for viewing. A class visit to the museum for object-based gallery learning provides unique opportunities for developing skills such as visual literacy, critical thinking, problem solving and oral communication. Educators are available to help you brainstorm ways to use the permanent collection or temporary exhibitions as a focus for student assignments and projects.
Class Visits
We offer guided class visits led by museum staff or self-guided visits for groups and classes. We will work with you to determine the best format for your group.
Class visit requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance, are based on schedule availability, and are limited to groups of 5 or more. Request a class visit here or email gmoa-tours@uga.edu to learn more.
Collection Study Visits
The Shannon and Peter Candler Collection Study Room provides access to works of art from the museum’s permanent collection that are not currently on view in the galleries. Faculty, students, researchers and members of the public may make a request for an object or group of objects to be pulled from storage for viewing in this room.
Please complete and submit the Collection Study Visit Request form on this page at least 3 weeks before your preferred date to request a visit to the collection study room. After we receive your request, museum staff will be in touch to confirm the date and time of your appointment.
Your visit is not booked until you receive a confirmation email. The confirmation email will contain instructions on how to send your list of requested objects for viewing. Please email gmoa-tours@uga.edu if you have scheduling questions.
Faculty Collaborations
As both the campus art museum and the official state museum of art, the Georgia Museum of Art acts as a bridge between university and community audiences. The Faculty Perspectives gallery talk series invites faculty members from different departments to share their expertise with our visitors. The museum frequently presents public programs such as lectures, music performances and gallery talks that highlight the creative and scholarly projects of UGA faculty and students. And the University Study Gallery offers the opportunity to build an entire class around objects from our collection.

Georgia Museum of Art Student Association
This student-run organization promotes the museum to students and encourages them to be involved in the arts at UGA and in Athens. The Student Association hosts free Student Nights at the museum three times a year, highlighting special exhibitions and featuring scavenger hunts and prizes, refreshments and music. Student Association members also organize community art events, including a pop-up artist market each spring. To learn more or to get involved, contact Alexis Gorby, associate curator of academic and campus engagement, at alexis.gorby@uga.edu or 706.542.4050.
