Enjoy the Museum
Visiting the museum, whether it’s for 5 minutes or an hour, is a great way to unwind. Wander through our 22 galleries to take in art from the Renaissance to the present day or make a date to visit your favorite painting. We have gallery stools that you can borrow if you want to sit a little longer and ponder.
The museum lobby makes for a unique study spot, with tables that look out on the sculpture garden. You’re welcome to hang out as long as you like. Food and drinks can’t go into the galleries, but you can have your coffee while you study or pick up a snack in the Museum Shop.
The museum offers programs including Yoga in the Galleries every third Thursday of the month, Morning Mindfulness on select Fridays, regular art-making classes, tours led by students and Student Night. All of these are free to attend. Want to learn more about what we’re doing every week? Sign up for our newsletter to learn about events and behind-the-scenes information.(opens in new tab)
Get Involved
The Georgia Museum of Art Student Association is run by students and is an official UGA student organization. Its members promote the museum to other students and encourage them to be involved in the arts at UGA and in Athens. They meet at the museum and help plan events designed just for UGA students. Get Experience
Student Guide Program
First-, second- and third-year University of Georgia undergraduate students from any major or college can join this student leadership and ambassador program to gain experience in research and public speaking. Student guides are paid, participate for up to 5 hours a week and meet weekly throughout the fall and spring semesters. While they meet, they learn how research, create and lead object-based public tours at the museum. Not an art history expert? Don’t worry. We’ll train you. Tours take place on weekends during the spring semester.
Student guides also represent the museum at various campus-wide and museum events and advocate for the museum as a key space and resource on campus.

Student Gallery Teachers
Second- and third-year undergraduate students and graduate students in all majors at the University of Georgia train as museum educators in this year-long paid program. First, they learn about the museum, its collection and its exhibitions as well as different approaches to gallery teaching. Then they work alongside museum staff and community docents to lead interactive and engaging tours for pre-K – 12 school groups. Student gallery teachers also assist with other museum programs that serve youth and family audiences.
Through workshops, field trips, behind-the-scenes tours and weekly training sessions, they develop valuable teaching, research and program evaluation skills. They also learn about art and object-based teaching and gain valuable experience working in a museum setting.

Internships and Employment
Looking to dig into museum work even more? The museum offers paid internships to third- and fourth-year undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Interns gain valuable hands-on experience and mentorship in a specific area of museum work, whether working with a curator, learning how to design exhibitions, cataloging art or promoting upcoming programs. They also can fulfill their experiential learning requirement or get course credit.
