learn to teach
The student gallery teacher program presents a unique opportunity for UGA students to learn about the museum, teach with original works of art and engage directly with the museum’s public audiences.
University of Georgia students of all backgrounds can apply for the Georgia Museum of Art’s student gallery teacher program. Student gallery teachers are important members of the museum’s teaching team. They will participate in regular trainings with museum educators, curators and other staff to learn about the museum, its collection and its special exhibitions.
Specialized gallery teaching training prepares student gallery teachers to play a vital public-facing role at the museum, leading interactive and engaging tours for PK – 12 groups. Student gallery teachers are trained as museum educators and work alongside museum education staff and community docents to lead tours for school groups, including the museum’s long-standing 5th-grade tour program. They also support other museum programs involving youth and family audiences.
Each cohort of students will meet regularly to refine their craft, build experience with public speaking and teaching and promote engagement with the museum across campus and community. Through workshops, field trips, behind-the-scenes tours and regular training sessions, students will develop valuable teaching, research and program evaluation skills, gain a broad knowledge of art and object-based teaching and acquire valuable experience working in a museum setting.
The student gallery teacher program is open to second- and third-year undergraduate students and graduate students from all disciplines at UGA. This is a year-long, paid opportunity of approximately 5 to 10 hours per week. Undergraduates will make $13.50 an hour and graduate students $16 an hour (the position is also Federal Work-Study eligible). This program meets the requirements for the Museum Studies Certificate internship course.
Successful applicants should have an interest in working with children and teaching with original works of art. No prior experience with teaching or art history background is required. Student gallery teachers should be available for training meetings on Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 5 p.m. and have some availability in the mornings, approximately 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday through Friday.
Applications are currently closed and will open back up this summer with a deadline of July 15. Training starts at the beginning of the fall semester. Students must commit to the program for the full academic year.
