Toddler Tuesday: Extra Ordinary

11.05.2025

For this Toddler Tuesday, we are going to be looking at a strange and mysterious painting. But first let’s read a book together.

The book we’re reading today is called “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” by Dr. Seuss.

What do you think of that book? Our imagination helps us think of new things, like gloves and SNUVS or a GUFF going by. What kind of things do you think when you try?

The artist who made this painting used his imagination. There are so many things happening in it. It is called “Lighthouses in the Alps” and it was painted by a man named Ken Davies. Let’s take a closer look.

What do you see? Do you see a frog, mountains in the distance and a picture frame? It looks like some of the things are coming out of the painting. That’s surprising! What do you see? Tell someone you are with some of the things you see and the things that you think about this painting.

Now that we have read a book and looked at art together, it’s your turn to make your own art.

You will need:
  • magazines and catalogs
  • scissors
  • paper
  • gluestick

How to make an extra ordinary collage:
  • Find magazines and catalogs to cut up.
  • Look through the pages to find interesting things to cut out for your collage. You might choose images of people, animals, food, household objects, plants… anything that catches your eye.
  • Practice scissor skills together. Snip and cut until you have enough shapes. The cut-outs do not have to be perfect.
  • Put glue on each shape and help your toddler stick them to the paper to create a collage. Use your imagination to arrange your cut-outs on the page in an extraordinary way!
