Art at Home: Watercolor Snowflakes

11.05.2025

During our last Family Day, in December, we celebrated the winter season. This is a special time of year to spend with friends and family while enjoying the cold weather. Sometimes, when it’s cold enough, it
even snows.

Snowflakes are nature’s works of art. Each one has a unique design, formed as it floats through the air. Just like artists create complex patterns in their art, nature creates interesting designs with snowflakes. Once they touch the ground, their designs might not be noticeable, but there are millions of different patterns scattered around.

Art Werger (American, b. 1955), “A Walk in the Snow,” 1996. Aquatint, 11 × 14 7/8 inches. Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia; Gift of Dr. S. William Pelletier. GMOA 2002.28.

You will need the following supplies:
  • paper
  • watercolor paint
  • salt
  • white crayon
  • paintbrush
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Draw your snowflake. Draw a snowflake on the paper with a white crayon. Press down hard so the lines show up clearly.
  2. Paint the background. Paint the paper with watercolors, covering the background and snowflake. The crayon will resist the paint, making the snowflake design appear.
  3. Sprinkle salt. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle salt on the painted areas. The salt will soak up some paint and create a snowy look.
  4. Let it dry. Wait for the paint to dry completely, then gently brush off the salt.
  5. Admire your snowy work of art!
