Our last Family Day, in April, highlighted the exhibition “Waffle House Vistas.” Artist Micah Cash photographed southern landscapes through Waffle House windows. Found throughout the South, these restaurants become frames for finding beauty in everyday places. Cash invites us to do the same by looking out our own windows to notice what’s around us.
A vista is a view from a specific place. Use one word to describe each of these photos of Waffle House vistas. Now, take a look outside your window. What do you see? What’s your favorite place to visit? What makes it special to you?
Now it’s your turn to design your own vista.
You will need the following supplies:
- cardstock
- patterned paper
- stickers
- pencil
- glue
DIRECTIONS:
- Find a spot by a window or door with a good view of the outside.
- Use the pencil to sketch the colors and shapes you see outside on the cardstock.
- Tear or cut the patterned paper into shapes to represent elements of your vista and arrange them on the cardstock.
- Glue the pieces in place.
- Add stickers to bring detail to your landscape.
