Student Photography Contest: Athens Through Our Eyes

In the fall of 2022, the Georgia Museum of Art invited Clarke County School District middle and high school students to submit original photography to a student photography contest in response to the theme: What does living in Athens in 2022 look like to you?

This project accompanied a special exhibition of southern photography entitled “Reckonings and Reconstructions: Southern Photography from the Do Good Fund,” on view at the museum October 8, 2022, through January 8, 2023.

The student photographs were on view November 12 – 30, 2022 in the museum’s Education Center.

When you think of Athens, Georgia, most of the time the college or Georgia football team comes to mind. What about the ones who see it every day? Athens is home to people and families who have stories to share. Athens is a place of families, connections, fun and excitement. Athens brings people together and builds people up from a strong foundation.

Students like me in Athens just want life to be smooth, memorable and comfortable. The town has a strong attachment to music, with many students playing an instrument or even just making beats. Some rappers make it out of Athens with their music careers like Lil Darius and Foogiano.

Looking at the photo, teenagers are posing together, but the reason behind it is not what you think. On this occasion teenagers got together to continue a music video and photo shoot. Many people came to support Mazii (Cedar Shoals senior Jaylen Stringer), supported by his friends and cousins. Each individual teen in the photo expresses how they would like to be seen as behind the main teen in the middle.

Each individual also has their own type of music and continues to express themselves behind others and support them in anything they have going on. As an up-and-coming self-taught teen photographer, I consider people’s reactions, looks, poses and the emotions of a photo to represent my work. Here everyone was in a good mood just to support their friend Mazii.

Not everyone is the same, not everyone will look at the moment, and the photo will not always turn out how you want it to be. I really hope others won’t just look at this photo and think “Oh it’s just some teenagers in Athens posing.” It’s more beyond that. They have stories, they have thoughts and dreams that they want to accomplish. I hope I can inspire others to look at this photo and think about where these teens are now today but also where they will be years from now.

“Trunk or Treat at Athens YMCA,” 2022

The main focus for my photograph was to show the Leaders in Training working at the Athens YMCA annual “Trunk or Treat.” The organization is important to me because I grew up going there in the summer and over the years I made so many friends and I love everyone there so much. The Leaders in Training theme was from the movie “Up.” This theme came from one of our favorite songs this summer called “Look up Child” by Lauren Daigle. Based on the song we just thought of the movie. Everyone was told to wear either a yellow shirt and or a collared shirt with jeans and their 86 hats to celebrate that they are team 86, showcasing that the YMCA has had 86 years of summer camp. Then they also had little sashes to show their character Russell. One leader in training actually dressed up as the old man Carl from the movie because he fit the role best. And another guy was just out of character but was still very involved.

The big idea from my photo was to showcase that the leaders in training were very helpful and they all showed their love for helping out in this event. The process it took me to get my photos was a bit hard because we had to get everyone together and we had to make sure everyone was comfortable with getting the picture taken. But after a few tries everyone made it work. The way the photo is set up the eyes tend to go toward the middle where we see a guy who was not smiling like everyone else. Then we also tend to see how one of the guys has his face covered because he did not follow the dress code we had.

The photo can also showcase how funny and unique it is. Everyone is so helpful when it comes to the events at the YMCA, and everyone loves to hang around each other. The background of the photo shows the house from the movie and the balloons that were used to make the house go up. Then the background also showed the clouds and the pretty blue sky from the movie and it really tied everything together.

I learned from this that no matter how hard you try you will still have trial and errors, and in the end everything will turn out fine. I saw how happy everyone was and it just truly shows the love that we all have for each other. Then I felt very warm inside because all the people I consider a part of my family and I love them very much. Everyone has a very special place in my heart and I love when we can all help out and just be together. The reason I love to see us all together is because we all go to different schools and we don’t see each other the whole year we only see each other in the summer. I hope I can experience this event again and make more memories with some of the best people ever. The photograph itself is very complex but it ties everything together to just be so unique.

When I was told about this contest, I had no idea what to take pictures of. Like most of my classmates, I thought of going down town and taking pictures of the University of Georgia campus and college students just doing their thing. I knew this was somewhat unrealistic for me, since my very strict parents would never agree to such things. Instead, I ended up going home with a camera and no real plan, on a rainy day. As we were going home, the raindrops on the windows of the car gave me an idea. I took out my camera and I took pictures of the only subject near me: my sister.

This picture was not thought out in every little detail, but the end result was something to be proud of. This picture communicates a cozy feeling. This feeling is portrayed by my sister’s interest in this book as well as some level of determination to finish it. The low lighting inside the car matched with the low sunlight peeking out from behind the clouds. It made the raindrops in the background almost shimmer. The bottom of the window makes a nice emphasis on the lines making up the thirds of the frame. These lines also make a natural guide from her eyes to the book that she is reading. The depth of field is not quite deep or shallow. The foreground is out of focus while she is in focus along with the book. The window in the background is also out of focus. All this allows the viewer to see her and ask themselves what book has her so engrossed.

My sister herself has said, “the best time for reading is when it is raining,” and I couldn’t agree more. The love of books that my sister and I share is how we bond over most things. Society as a whole has compared us a lot and we are very competitive as a result. Even when it comes to reading, we are constantly comparing ourselves regarding the books read and how fast we read them, and it becomes a whole argument, but we bond regardless. This picture shows her love of books and reading, which I also love and I wanted to showcase this emotion through her.

My photograph shows my sister posing in the middle of the forest. When I think about what living in Athens looks like, I personally think about the people around me, and the places I enjoy going to, but mostly, I think about my family. I wanted my sister in my photo because, out of everyone in my family, I spend most of my time with her. We’re close in age, and I figured she would be the most comfortable with taking photos since she is also in journalism like me. The forest is a place my family hikes in, and a beautiful place to take pictures. We like to visit every year and my dad even goes deer hunting with my brother during hunting season.

I was not sure what I wanted to capture in my photograph. I didn’t know if I wanted to frame her with trees, or have her stand off center. The only thing I knew I wanted was to have a shallow depth of field: the forest background blurred and my sister in focus. I wanted her to be the main focus because even though places are one of the things that come to mind, when I think about what living in Athens looks like, family is more important to me. I took a few pictures of her just walking, and others where she was talking to my dad. Like me, she would rather be taking the photo than be the one in it, but she was helpful and suggested different ideas for a better shot. She would say things like, “Take one from here. How about you try it from this angle?”

In the end, I learned that you have to be patient with taking pictures. I probably spent an hour or two trying different ideas, then another hour of going through the pictures and picking out my favorite one. This photo shows my family, and one of our favorite places. In Athens, you have a lot of stores and fast food restaurants: normal things you could see anywhere else in Georgia. But my sister and the forest are unique, and you couldn’t find them anywhere else but in Athens.

U-Lead is a non profit organization that helps students with DACA renewal, college applications/scholarship applications, and homework help with any grade level. College students and college professors offer their help to the students of Athens every Thursday from 6-8. With that being said I don’t think many people know about this organization, and I want to showcase the importance and the impact it has had to many students. Most “meetings” aren’t photographed, so most people don’t know what really goes on at U-Lead.

My idea was this door leading almost to another world— another point-of-view of Athens. Behind the door is a completely different world to the students that attend weekly. That’s why I’m outside the door, so I can show what’s on the other side of it. This decision of me being outside to take the photo seemed unreasonable at first because the main thing you want to capture is the faces of students and being up close and personal. The door is framed in the middle to let the viewer go straight into looking at the people inside. My goal was to focus on the people inside, and let the door patterns be unfocused. I purposely wanted the door to be in the way so you can see from another person’s perspective before they walk in. I thought if I took a picture from the door, it’d just be a perspective from someone that’s already “inside” this other world U-Lead has, but I wanted to showcase it from a perspective of someone who has no knowledge about U-Lead.

I saw the opportunity of not only showcasing U-Lead but also having a meaningful message behind it. As U-lead continues to grow and expand not only population but popularity in Athens, it will always be another world. “2022 Cedar Shoals Annual Blood Drive in Athens, GA,” 2022

The main idea of my work is to express/show what the annual Red Cross Blood Drive is about. I was trying to communicate how giving blood is a good thing and that it can save lives. I was also trying to communicate how students can do good things at times and how many students were interested because it was during school and how accessible it was.

I communicated my idea by taking various shots/photos of students/teachers donating their blood to save lives. I feel like many students were able to donate not only because of the requirement, but since it was so accessible to students they had a lot of students donate their blood. Not only did students donate, they also volunteered at the drive. It was very accessible for these students to do both deeds since it was during school and at their school. During the blood drive, there was a lot to think about: whether where to take pictures and what to take pictures of. I decided to take some wide shots of the blood drive to show that it was hosted in Cedar Shoals High School and what it looked like. When looking at the photo, we can see two teachers and a student waiting for the Red Cross workers to get back to them during their blood drawing process. You can also see in the background there was a table set up for a waiting area and where volunteers were comforting the patients before and after the process. We can also see that Cedar has very open space to allow and make these events happen. This also can show us what the community of Athens is; helpful, kind, sharing, etc.

I learned that when something is happening like an event you’re taking photos of, there is a lot more to think about. Things such as where to take the shot, what to take the shot of and how you should approach the shot.

“People of Athens,” 2022

I wanted to show the Culture of Athens and the style of parts of Athens by showing the kids that live here and how football is a major part of it. I took this photo at a Cedar Shoals football game; this was the last home football game for the team. I was walking down the stairs to get some snacks and a girl stopped me and asked for a photo. I thought it might be cool for the project because it features kids that live in Athens and go to school here. Also you could see the football game going on in the background.

I really wanted to show the culture of Athens and what it looks like to live here. Football is probably one of the things Athens is most known for because of UGA. Also I wanted to show the people of Athens, a HUGELY diverse city in many ways. I wanted to show some emotion to so I got them to get energetic. I demonstrated use of the use rule of thirds by getting their head a little bit above the middle of the frame. My ISO was not very high because of all of the lights around the stadium. Also since they were moving around a bit I turned my shutter speed higher so it would come out more clearer.

While taking this I got to experience how energetic and happy the people are around Athens. I met a lot of friendly people taking pictures. I hope that people will learn that while Athens has some bad things going on, the people that live here are not all like that. People always say how rough the East side is but thats only certain people and parts of Athens. If you walk around downtown anytime of the day there will always be people happy looking at all the stores and taking pictures.

“Cedar Shoals Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Car Show,” 2022

The main idea of my work is to show parts of the community of Athens, Georgia. The community in Athens is very social, diverse and supportive. When a lot of people think of Athens, most people think of the University of Georgia and the football team, but to me Athens is about the people and the local places and events.

During Saturday on October 22, 2022, the Cedar Shoals Hot Rodders of Tomorrow hosted their annual car show. This car show helped bring people together who are a part of the community. Many people came out and attended the show, even alumni from Cedar Shoals. It dosen’t matter if you have a car to show or not. If you want to just get out of the house or see some nice cars then it’s a great event to go to.

In the picture that I took, I tried to emphasize the rule of thirds and depth of field. I wanted to get a picture of some of the cars lined up and people talking in the background to show the community and what kind of cars there were. There were a lot of trucks and some vintage Dodge Challengers. Most of the cars had a really nice interior: leather seats with various colors. A lot of the cars were modded with different engines, rims and paint jobs.

There were a lot of options for food. A local barbecue business in Athens came to cater. They were grilling barbecue ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, sodas. The Cedar Shoals HoPe club came to sell drinks and snacks as a fundraiser. There were raffles for tickets for prizes, some with entry fees and some without.

Overall the car show was a great event to come out to just to have fun. Regardless of age, gender and sexuality. Most of the car owners came with their own cars but in groups. Athens has a great community even without UGA and their football team.

“Generations”

People have been interested in cars for as long as they have been a thing. They might like different types of cars or appreciate those cars in different ways, but every one of those people can bond over the thrill of going as fast as possible or the feeling of accomplishment from finishing the installation of a new part. I decided to take pictures at Cedar Shoals High School Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Car Show to try to capture some of this connection.

I wasn’t really trying to communicate anything specifically, but I chose this photo because it shows different generations communicating and bonding over something they are all interested in. The people in the picture are talking about the car that you can see in the bottom right. The car they are talking about is a car made by some of the students at Cedar Shoals. The automotive tech instructor Mr. Darden had started the engine up which is why everyone was standing around and talking about it.

I tried to give the picture personality by showing the people talking and also showing what the people were talking about. I used the rule of thirds by lining up their heads on the top horizontal line. I also tried to line up people on the two vertical lines. I wanted the main focus of the picture to be the people communicating so I lined up the car to be pointing towards the people from out of the frame to guide the viewers attention to them.

I think this image shows that all people can come together no matter how old or how young they are and talk as long as they have something that they are mutually interested in. I hope this could inspire more people to try to talk to people who are either older than them, younger than them, or both. People can learn a lot if and when they talk to people from different generations then themselves.

The main idea of my work is to show what represents Athens to me. I chose to take a picture of my cousin’s birthday on Halloween. This represents what Athens means to me because I spend most of my time with my family. Although it is Halloween I don’t go out or trick or treat sometimes because my family members believe it’s the day of the devil. We also spend every other holiday together in Athens too. So that’s why I chose to take a picture of my family because it’s who/what I spend most of my time doing/being with in Athens. Another reason why I choose to take a picture of my family members is that I don’t go out that much in Athens. I feel like there aren’t a lot of places to go to or places that I have found out about at the moment.

I communicate my big idea by taking a picture of my cousin giving out a piece of his “cake” to my family members. You can also see his dad looking at him giving out a cake with a smile on his face from across the room. While doing this you can see the rule of thirds happening in the photo. In the photo I took you can also see shallow focus. You can see this because the photo focuses on his dad and another family member while the background of the photo becomes blurred. I also decided to take the photo from the corner of the room so you can see most of the people there. Even though you can really see his “birthday cake” in the background you are able to vaguely see the smile on his face while he is giving out slices to the people around him. Finally, I didn’t have any big problems while taking the photo other than people not wanting to show their faces and some people not wanting to be in it.

I hope others can really see the joy/happiness happening in the photo. I would also hope that they think more about spending more time with their family members. Another thing I hope people would see when encountering my work is the joy on the father’s face seeing his son with a smile on his face. I feel like seeing that really brings the photo together. In conclusion, this photo represents what Athens means to me.

“Sister Rivalry,” 2022

This picture is meant to symbolize the fierce yet friendly competition of sisters during an intense game of pool. I tried to encapsulate the image of sisterhood while being at the SAPS organization party. In the specific shot one of the sisters is about to score the winning ball as her sister watches eager for her to miss. You can see how hard she’s focusing on making the winning ball because she knows if she misses her sister can come back and steal the win.

I feel like this picture shows the bond between sisters but also the competition and pressure of the final shot. You could feel and see the competitiveness in the room as she shot the final ball and unfortunately missed. When I first tried to get photos of this game the room was really dark besides the light on the pool table so I kind of had to make that work by taking the picture from a certain angle to get it to show up. I chose to get both of the sisters in the shot because I felt like if I just got one of the sisters it wouldn’t have shown the bond/competition between them. The lighting in the photo wasn’t the best but I feel like it still looks good and still captures their expressions of fear and excitement. The laser focus of both of the sisters, one trying not to mess up and the other hoping she will.

I learned to move around and get different angles when taking pictures in a darker setting and to try to capture as much emotion in a photo as possible. When other people see this photo I hope they feel the sisterhood and feel the pressure of the final shot. The first thing I want them to notice is the amount of focus that both sisters are putting into this last shot. I want them to feel the fierce competition between them and the desperation of the losing sister for her sister to miss. SAPS is an organization that is a support group for young women when you join you are assigned a “big sister” that is just supposed to be someone that is there for you.

This photo was taken on my favorite street in Athens. I didn’t grow up on Boulevard or even around it but whenever I’m on that street it feels like home to me. A lot of my close friends live around there and when I go hang out with them we always walk on the street. The people in the photo are some of my favorite people ever. I wanted to capture what it’s like to be a teen on that side of Athens.

There are a lot of buildings that they show to represent Athens. They we forget about the buildings that are not in a good location. Buildings that have more of a vintage look. Athens is known for the collage that is in downtown. Everywhere you go is a lease building. Left to right. It’s hard for people to get buildings for their business that has a good location. It does have dramatic lighting that makes this building stand out. ATHENS is not all just shiny new downtown that’s being seen.

The rejuvenation of teenage girls touching up their hair and makeup in the bathroom mirror is an indescribable feeling. The power they hold as they gaze into their reflection, appreciating every line and freckle that graces their face. A connection to each other that blossoms in this moment of admiring each other’s beauty. This female connection has been an extremely important aspect of my life in Athens, GA. I cherish the friendship that has thrived throughout my high school experience and the memories I have made with these beautiful human beings. In this photograph I was able to capture the divine feeling of confidence they hold and the love they express for each other.

The first statue, the one on the bench, is of Bernard B. Ramsey. I remember taking family photos on campus and ending up near this statue and taking so many goofy photos with it. The second statue can be found in the Founders Garden, but I don’t know the name or artist who created it. When my mom worked for UGA she would take me to the koi pond in the founders garden and I’d admire that statue. Going downtown was a huge part of my childhood so being a teen that spends a lot of time there I get really Nostalgic and I never take time to let it soak in. This photo is sort of my way of doing that.

Athens is a city with so many different people from every corner of the earth, and although Athens is so diverse, it still seems like there’s no place for me. “Light of the Arch,” 2022

When I took this picture I wanted the main focus to be of the University of Georgia’s Arch and something representing the UGA football team. UGA is a huge part of Athens and the Arch represents that. After the UGA football team’s championship win, Athens has been full of football. Everywhere you go in Athens you will see championship posters, flags, and shirts. The championship win has impacted Athens greatly. The people of Athens were very excited about the championship victory, and we still are.

When I was taking the picture I wanted to somehow capture something representing the UGA campus and UGA football. I used long exposure to get red and white tail lights from cars. I thought of this when I was taking pictures of the Arch first. I noticed the car lights could leave a cool effect. Then when I was thinking about how else I could incorporate UGA,. I positioned myself so I could get the Arch and the back tail lights of the cars. After several attempts I got a picture with the perfect colors and focused on the Arch.

When I was taking these pictures it took a lot of attempts. I learned a lot about representing something with a picture. I had to represent two things at once. This at first was a challenge but then after a while of thinking and trying new things I got it. I also learned how to expand from my ideas. Originally I was just trying to get a picture of the UGA Arch. Then I saw an opportunity to expand my idea and tried it. I hope when people see this picture they enjoy the cool effect from the car trail lights. I hope they see and appreciate the effort and creativity gone into the picture. I think this picture represents Athens very well.

“Athens Is a Kaleidoscope,” 2022

I took this photo here for many reasons. One of them was the ladybug. Ladybugs mean good luck and prosperity and I feel like that’s how Athens is. One of the other reasons I took this photo was because something that a lot of people would not pay attention to is the UPS truck showing how people get their goods today and that has changed in my short lifetime. Lastly, I took this picture because of how colorful it is and Athens is one of the most colorful and aesthetically pleasing places I have ever traveled to.

ABOUT ME: I grew up going to Oconee schools But then the summer of 5th grade my parents decided to have me go to Athens for 5th grade. My mom works as a social worker for Clarke County schools. The day I switched to the Athens school district I clicked immediately. The day I got there I felt like this was home. If you skip forward to this year I am actively in 6th grade. During the summer my grandma and my mom said I have a good talent for photography. so when this contest came out I thought it would be super fun to see what happens. I like going to school in Athens because there is so much diversity and everything seems happier and more colorful.

I spend a lot of time at Clarke Central, and being there is a big part of my life. I wanted my artwork to capture a particular time of the Clarke Central experience: coming to school in the morning. Everybody comes to school in the morning, and my idea was to try and capture that time where there is a lot of hustle & bustle. To make my artwork, I took a photo of the front of the school and printed it on fabric transfer paper, which I then ironed onto a piece of white fabric. I then embroidered 6 different people onto the image. I hope my artwork captures the unique & universal experience of going to school, which is a big part of my life as an Athens teenager.

“A Bootiful Night,” 2022

By taking this picture I was trying to communicate how Athens looks through my eyes. The picture I chose to take was my brother during Halloween. I decided on this picture because that is what Athens looks to me. Fun and scary is what is shown in my picture. Athens takes Halloween with all seriousness and makes it big with lots of fun for people to enjoy. Athens does many events for Halloween and open up scary farms for people to visit. They also have early events that give out candy to kids that can’t wait till the day of Halloween.

The message in my pictures is that Athens is big on holidays and love to make it fun for everyone to enjoy. In my picture I am using the rule of thirds, I tried to align his arm with the second vertical line and have his cleaver at a certain angle going through the first horizontal line. I also had the ear of the pig touch the first horizontal line. I had him more to the left so he wouldn’t just be in the middle and so we could see a little bit of the dark woods in the back to give it that spooky feeling. Some problems I had while taking the picture was cars passing by because their light would flash on him and change the setting of the light I wanted which was the orange street light color. Another problem I had was making it focus because of the lighting so it came a bit blurry.

What I learned is that not everyone can enjoy Halloween like others but we can enjoy it for them. When people see this picture I want them to feel a little bit of fear but also interest because it seems like a random picture but it actually has a meaning behind it. I want to them think as to why that picture exactly, why that set up.
