The Lynching

by Charlie Hartness

Description

Song with banjo accompaniment.

THERE’S A LOOP OF ROPE AROUND HIS NECK
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS HAND
A LOOP OF ROPE HUNG ROUND HIS NECK
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS HAND
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS FEET AS WELL
PULLED THEM OUT AND JESUS FELL
A LOOP OF ROPE HUNG ROUND HIS NECK
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS HAND OH
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS HAND

THERE’S A GOLDFINCH SITTING IN A TREE
HE DON’T UNDERSTAND
GOLDFINCH SITTING IN A TREE
AND HE DON’T UNDERSTAND
DROP OF BLOOD UPON HIS HEAD
FROM THE WOUND WHERE JESUS BLED
GOLDFINCH SITTING IN A TREE
AND HE DON’T UNDERSTAND LORD
HE DON’T UNDERSTAND

THERE’S A LOOP OF ROPE AROUND HIS NECK
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS HAND
A LOOP OF ROPE HUNG ROUND HIS NECK
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS HAND
A NAIL HOLE IN HIS FEET AS WELL
PULLED THEM OUT AND JESUS FELL
A LOOP OF ROPE HUNG ROUND HIS NECK
AND HE DON’T UNDERSTAND LORD
HE DON’T UNDERSTAND
NO HE DON’T UNDERSTAND LORD
HE DON’T UNDERSTAND

Artist Statement

On a rainy Friday in January my wife Nancy and I walked to the art museum. We ate lunch and looked at the rusting figures in the sculpture garden, then went upstairs to the Kress Collection room.

I read about Samuel H. Kress collecting European paintings during the Great Depression and then sharing them with people all over the country for the rest of his life.

As a Southerner who grew up with stories of the Depression and the constant presence of the Church I was moved by three of the paintings in the room: "Christ, Man of Sorrows," "Crucifixion," and "Madonna and Child."
