The Good Hope AME Church is a very small rural African American church near the Altamaha River in south Georgia. There is a simple elegance in the unpainted wooden hand-hewn benches and rocking chairs. Members of the singing congregation are hovering ghostly in the rafters, and like the painting “Christ, Man of Sorrows,” their worship service centers on the redemption of mankind and Christ’s promise of eternal life. The open church door emits a radiant glow that hints of the immensities of time and spirituality.
