Toddler Tuesday: Circles, Triangles and Squares, Oh My!

For Toddler Tuesday this month we’re looking at shapes.

Check out this work of art by Sophie Taeuber-Arp for inspiration. What do you see? What shapes can you find? When you find them, trace them with your finger.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp (Swiss, 1889 – 1943), “1931-7 Deux cercles, deux plans et lignes croisées,” from an untitled portfolio of 10 prints after original works by Sophie Taueber-Arp, 1957. Color serigraph on heavy paper. Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia; Museum purchase with funds provided by Martha Randolph Daura. GMOA 2020.44.5.

Now it is time to make your own art. You are going to decorate a hanging mobile of shapes.

For this activity you will need:

  • wooden or cardboard shapes with a hole in them
  • string
  • paintbrush
  • paint
  • kraft paper or newspaper
  1. Spread out newspaper or kraft paper on your work surface for easy clean-up.
  2. Tie the shapes together with the string.
  3. Help your young artist decorate the shapes with paint.
  4. Let the paint dry and then hang the mobile.
