Samurai Film Series: “Kagemusha”

7:30 – 10:30 pm

When a warlord dies, a peasant thief is called upon to impersonate him, and then finds himself haunted by the warlord’s spirit as well as by his own ambitions. In this masterpiece from late in his career, director Akira Kurosawa returns to the samurai film and to the tension between illusion and reality. Sumptuously reconstructing the splendor of feudal Japan and the pageantry of war, Kurosawa creates a historical epic that is also a meditation on the nature of power. Japanese with English subtitles. 1980, 180 min. Introduction by Hyangsoon Yi, professor of comparative literature and director of the Center for Asian Studies.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Samurai: The Way of the Warrior.” This film series is generously sponsored by UGA Parents and Families Association.
