12th Annual Spotlight on the Arts Festival Starts Next Week

Starting November 1, the University of Georgia’s 12th annual Spotlight on the Arts festival will run all month long, with many events organized by the Georgia Museum of Art. Spotlight on the Arts is a product of the University of Georgia’s Arts Council, whose mission is to “bring together campus leaders to facilitate arts research and practice, to integrate the arts into the UGA student experience, to engage with community partners and to communicate faculty, staff and student achievements to regional, national and international communities.” Diverse and engaging events will take place all over campus and beyond from November 1 to November 30, reaching students, faculty, staff and community members.

Some of the events scheduled at the museum for Spotlight are:

Curator Talk: “Nancy Baker Cahill: Through Lines”
Wednesday, November 1, 2 p.m.
Kathryn Hill, curatorial assistant in contemporary art, will give a gallery talk in the exhibition. Cahill’s work examines systemic power, consciousness, the human body and the impact of humans on the biosphere through interdisciplinary and hybrid practices.

Family Day: 75th Anniversary Celebration and Spotlight on the Arts Family Day
Sunday, November 5, 1 – 5 p.m.
This gigantic birthday bash will feature art activities for the entire family, as well as prizes, the announcement of the winner of Museum Madness, a photo booth, light refreshments and much more. Register here to let us know how much cake to order.

Torrance Lecture: Portia Maultsby, “Community, Culture and Black Musical Creativity”
Tuesday, November 7, 2:30 – 4 p.m.
Register early for this free event organized by the Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development at UGA’s Mary Frances Early College of Education. Indiana University professor Portia K. Maultsby will examine how a live performance by James Brown influenced the way she thought about, critiqued and engaged with musical creativity, continuing into her current professional study of ethnomusicology.

Public Concert: Celebrating Contemporary Black Music
Tuesday, November 7, 4 p.m.
Wrapping up the Torrance Center’s mini-conference “The Singular Creativity of African American Musical Creativity,” this free concert features musical artists Aquatic Soul, Farin, Freedom Zunga, P.O. The Priceless One and William May. Get your free mobile e-ticket online to reserve a spot.

Artful Conversation: Thomas Hart Benton
Wednesday, November 8, 2 p.m.
Artful Conversation is a 30-minute program that focuses on one work of art to provide an opportunity for close looking, open-ended dialogue and discovery. Join Callan Steinmann, curator of education, for a conversation about Benton’s “Study for Planting (Planters).”

Holbrook Memorial Program: “Making the South Modern”
Thursday, November 9, 5:30 p.m.
Join us for a dynamic conversation about the American South’s contribution to 20th-century modernism, which developed through various styles, themes and artists and emerged around key sites of artistic instruction like the University of Georgia and the vanguard programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the region. This panel is presented with the special exhibition “Southern/Modern.” Panelists will include Shawnya Harris, Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the Georgia Museum of Art; Rebecca VanDiver, associate professor of African and African American art at Vanderbilt University; and Jeffrey Richmond-Moll, George Putnam Curator of American Art at the Peabody Essex Museum. This program is part of the University of Georgia’s Signature Lecture Series.

Student Night: Happy Birthday, Georgia Museum of Art!
Thursday, November 16, 6 – 8 p.m.
Join the Student Association of the Georgia Museum of Art to celebrate the museum’s 75th birthday with refreshments, door prizes and themed activities. Thank you to the UGA Parents Leadership Council for generously sponsoring Student Night.

Third Thursday
Thursday, November 16 6 – 9 p.m.
Athens’ established venues for visual art hold this event devoted to art in the evening hours on the third Thursday of every month to showcase their visual-arts programming. Full schedules and participants are posted at 3Thurs.org.

Drawing in the Galleries
Saturday, November 18, 2 – 4 p.m.
Experience drawing in the museum galleries with instructor Joel Rosenburg. This artist-led workshop will provide instruction, art supplies and space to spread out. Register for free by emailing gmoa-tours@uga.edu to reserve a spot.

Toddler Tuesday: Giving Thanks
Tuesday, November 21, 10 a.m.
Enjoy looking at art and storytime together in the galleries, then complete an art activity just for the little ones. This free program is designed for families with children ages 18 months to 3+ years. Seats are limited; email gmoa-tours@uga.edu to reserve a spot.
