Quayola: “Strata #4”

Thursday, Mar 20, 2014 — Sunday, Jun 15, 2014

Quayola is a visual artist based in London who works in photography, geometry, time-based digital sculptures and immersive audiovisual installations and performances. “Strata #4” is a multichannel immersive video installation commissioned by the Palais de Beaux Arts in Lille. The subject of this work is a series of iconic pieces from that museum’s Flemish collection, focusing specifically on Rubens’ and Van Dyck’s grand altarpieces. The video installation results from a study of the paintings, delving beneath their appearance and looking at the rules that govern the composition, color schemes and proportions of each work, examining the collisions between classical figuration and contemporary abstraction.
