Recent: Acquisitions

Saturday, Jul 16, 2016 — Sunday, Oct 09, 2016

“Recent: Acquisitions” included more than two dozen works of art in a variety of media: works on paper, decorative arts, works on canvas and a neon light sculpture by Nils Folke Anderson. All four of the museum’s curators of fine art selected them from works that have entered the collection since 2013, the last time the museum presented this kind of exhibition. Highlights included six mixed-media pieces on gessoed paper by African American artist Freddie Styles, Jean Dufy’s painting “Moulin Rouge,” a color photograph by Alabama artist Jerry Siegel and a double-headed rooster stoneware piece by Edwin “Nub” Meaders. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to choose the subject of a special tour on August 10, 2016, that focused on a single object. They could either vote in the gallery or in a Facebook album on the museum’s page by “liking” a specific work. The curator who selected the work that wins the most votes led the tour.
